Automated Meter Reading
In a continuing effort to provide superior local service, Northern Lights has begun installation of automated meter reading devices known as
Turtles© . The devices are installed in the meter and send a slow signal through the electric lines to our substations. When it is time to process bill, Northern Lights calls the substation by phone and electronically transfers the reading to our billing software.
- Efficiencies are enhanced by:
- Freeing our members from the responsibility of meter reading.
- Elimination of the need to enter each meter reading by hand.
- Elimination of follow up on accounts when a meter reading is not received.
- Ability to transfer accounts without asking the member to provide a final meter reading.
- Reduces need to send lineman to the field to do meter reading.
- Ability to provide information to members regarding their energy usage.

How to
Read Your Meter
Clock-type dials have
rotating hands to indicate usage. Each hand rotates in the
opposite direction of the preceding dial, either clockwise
or counterclockwise. To ensure accurate readings, it is
important to stand directly in front of the meter and have
sufficient lighting.
- Read the meter dials
from right to left and record readings in the same
order.
- When the hand is between
two digits, record the smaller number.
- If the hand is not on or
slightly past that digit, record the lower digit. If you
are not certain whether the hand has reached the next
digit, check the digit to the right.
- Subtracting the last
reading from your present reading, times the multiplier
if your meter has one, will determine the amount of
energy used.
- Refer to the last
reading on your bill and check for accuracy.
